In your role as an EMS clinician, you face numerous risks and hazards. One of those risks comes from exposure to a blood-borne infection from the people you are helping. During some medical emergencies, you may encounter a person with open wounds and the presence of blood or other body fluids. You may need to perform advanced life support procedures using needles and other sharp instruments. This puts you at an increased risk of becoming infected with pathogens like HIV or hepatitis. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (or OSHA) has developed a standard that includes safeguards to protect workers against health hazards caused by blood-borne pathogens. This training covers important safety protocols to protect workers who can reasonably anticipate coming into contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials while performing their job duties.Upon completion of this course, you will receive CEHs:1.5 hrs - Operations

Welcome! This online training course is intended for Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs). This course introduces EMDs to the Maine Call Receipt Transfer and Assessment Policy, which is designed to support emergency dispatch professionals who are handling mental and behavioral health calls for service. The course will review the policy components and demonstrate how to use the Behavioral Health Caller - Policy Decision Tree to determine the best pathway for connecting callers to the most appropriate resource. The scenarios provided will allow the student to practice following the Policy Decision Tree; they are not intended to depict every possible outcome. We recognize that each caller and situation is unique and that EMDs must be empowered through policy and education to employ reasonable decision-making for optimal outcomes for patients and callers.Successful completion of this course by all licensed EMDs in the Center is ONE of FOUR components that are required to facilitate the effective transfer of callers reporting non-emergency mental or behavioral health situations to a resource OTHER THAN a response by public safety professionals. These resources include "9-8-8," which is also known as the Maine Crisis Line.
